missed diagnosis
Undetected health condition
A missed diagnosis occurs when a medical condition goes unidentified—the doctor fails to recognize what's wrong, and the patient leaves without answers.
Unlike a misdiagnosis, where the wrong condition is identified, a missed diagnosis means no diagnosis at all: The tumor was a missed diagnosis that cost her two years of treatment time.
The term appears frequently in malpractice contexts.
