twixt
Archaic for between
Twixt is a poetic or archaic shortening of betwixt, itself an old form of between.
It survives mainly in the phrase twixt cup and lip, referring to the gap between intention and completion where things can go wrong.
Outside such set phrases, twixt sounds deliberately old-fashioned or whimsical.
