turtledoves
Christmas carol birds
Turtledoves are small wild doves known for their soft, purring coo and their devoted pair bonds.
The name comes from the Latin for their call, not from turtles.
Because mated pairs stay close and seem affectionate, turtledove became a term of endearment for a sweetheart: Hello, my turtledove.
They appear in the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas."
