tubular bell

Hollow metallic percussion

A tubular bell is a percussion instrument consisting of a metal tube, typically brass or bronze, suspended vertically and struck with a mallet to produce a resonant, bell-like tone.

Orchestras use sets of tubular bells (also called chimes) arranged like piano keys to simulate church bells: The tubular bells rang out in the finale.

The instrument gained wider recognition through Mike Oldfield's 1973 album of the same name.
