Exorcist

Casts out devils

An exorcist is a person who performs exorcisms—rituals intended to drive out demons, evil spirits, or other supernatural entities believed to have possessed a person, place, or object.

The term is most associated with Catholic priests specially trained and authorized by the Church to perform such rites, though exorcists exist across many religious traditions.

The family called for an exorcist after conventional explanations failed.

The word gained wide cultural currency from the 1973 horror film of the same name.
