trolley systems

Electric street transit

Trolley systems are networks of electric streetcars that run on tracks embedded in city streets, drawing power from overhead wires.

Once the dominant form of urban transit in American cities, most were dismantled by the mid-20th century in favor of buses and automobiles.

A few historic systems survive, and some cities have built new ones: San Francisco's trolley system is a tourist attraction.
