trestlework

Supportive beam structure

Trestlework is a structure of trestles—frameworks of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal beams—used to support something above ground level.

The term appears most often in descriptions of railroad bridges spanning valleys or gorges, where wooden or steel trestlework carries the tracks: The train crossed the canyon on aging trestlework.
