trephine

Circular surgical cutter

A trephine is a cylindrical surgical saw used to cut circular holes in bone, especially the skull.

The procedure, called trephination or trepanning, is one of the oldest known surgical operations—prehistoric skulls show evidence of it.

Modern trephines are used in cranial surgery and corneal transplants.

As a verb, to trephine is to operate with this instrument: The surgeon trephined the skull to relieve pressure.
