town manager
Local government head
A town manager is a hired professional who oversees the daily operations of a town government.
Unlike an elected mayor, the town manager is appointed by the town council or board of selectmen to handle administrative duties—budgeting, hiring staff, coordinating departments.
The position is common in smaller municipalities that use a council-manager form of government: The town manager presented the annual budget to the selectmen.
