tonic-clonic
Full-body seizure
Tonic-clonic describes a type of seizure with two distinct phases.
In the tonic phase, muscles stiffen and the person loses consciousness.
In the clonic phase, muscles jerk rhythmically.
Formerly called grand mal seizures, tonic-clonic seizures are the type most people picture when they think of epilepsy: She had a tonic-clonic seizure and fell to the floor.
