grand mal

Severe epileptic episode

Grand mal is a type of epileptic seizure involving loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions throughout the body.

The term comes from French meaning "great illness," distinguishing it from petit mal, a milder form.

Now often called tonic-clonic seizure in medical contexts: She hadn't had a grand mal in over two years.
