tone color
Instrument's sonic fingerprint
Tone color is the distinctive quality of a sound that distinguishes one instrument or voice from another, even when playing the same pitch at the same volume.
A violin and a flute playing the same note sound different because of their tone color.
Also called timbre: The composer exploited the rich tone color of the French horn.
