tip off

Give insider information

Tip off has two distinct uses.

As a verb phrase, to tip someone off is to give them advance warning or secret information: Someone tipped off the police about the robbery.

As a noun, a tipoff is that warning itself, or the opening play of a basketball game when the ball is tossed up between two players.
