deep throat

Beyond the gag

Deep throat refers to a sexual act in which a penis is inserted fully into a partner's mouth and throat.

As a verb, to deep-throat is to perform this act.

The term extends figuratively to mean taking something in completely or, in journalism, to a confidential source who provides inside information—from the pseudonym of the Watergate informant, itself derived from the 1972 pornographic film.

The reporter's deep throat revealed the cover-up.
