tickbirds

Perch on cattle

Tickbirds are small African birds that perch on large mammals like cattle, rhinoceroses, and buffalo, feeding on ticks and other parasites from their hosts' skin.

Also called oxpeckers, they represent a classic example of symbiosis in nature—the bird gets food while the mammal gets pest removal.

Tickbirds scattered as the elephant approached the waterhole.
