thundercloud

Ominous dark mass

A thundercloud is a large, dark cloud that produces thunder and lightning—technically a cumulonimbus.

The word also describes a person's angry or threatening expression: His face was a thundercloud when he heard the news.

Both uses emphasize darkness and the promise of an impending storm.
