mammatus

Udder-shaped cloud formations

Mammatus describes a cloud formation with distinctive rounded, pouch-like bulges hanging from the underside of a cloud layer, resembling udders or bubbles.

These formations typically appear on the underside of storm clouds and signal atmospheric instability: The mammatus clouds warned of severe weather approaching.

The term comes from the Latin word for breast.
