Pressed to open
A thumbpiece is the part of a mechanism designed to be pressed or manipulated by the thumb.
On a door latch, it's the lever you depress to release the bolt.
On a beer stein or tankard, it's the projection on the lid that allows one-handed opening while holding the handle.
Medical instruments, lighters, and various tools also feature thumbpieces positioned for ergonomic thumb operation.
