third-party apps
Outside developer programs
Third-party apps are software applications made by developers other than the manufacturer of the device or platform they run on.
Your phone comes with first-party apps from Apple or Google, but apps from independent developers are third-party: I use a third-party app for my calendar because the default one is terrible.
The term often appears in discussions of privacy, security, or compatibility, since third-party apps may have different access permissions or support levels than native software.
