the wave

Fans rise sequentially

The wave is a stadium phenomenon where successive sections of spectators stand briefly with raised arms, then sit, creating a ripple effect around the arena: The crowd started doing the wave in the seventh inning.

Outside North America it's called a Mexican wave, after gaining international attention during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
