terracotta warrior
Ancient ceramic guard
A terracotta warrior is one of the thousands of life-sized clay soldier statues buried with China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, around 210 BCE.
Discovered in 1974 near Xi'an, the figures were meant to guard the emperor in the afterlife.
Each warrior has individualized features—different faces, hairstyles, and armor.
The term often appears in plural: the terracotta warriors, China's terracotta army.
