terra cotta warrior
Ancient clay soldier
A terra cotta warrior is one of thousands of life-sized clay soldier statues buried with China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, around 210 BCE.
Discovered in 1974 near Xi'an, the figures were meant to guard the emperor in the afterlife.
Each warrior has individualized features—no two faces are alike.
The term sometimes appears figuratively for someone standing rigid and expressionless: He stood there like a terra cotta warrior.
