Easter Island head

Polynesian carved colossus

A massive stone statue carved by the ancient Rapa Nui people of Easter Island, depicting a human figure with an oversized head and elongated features.

The statues, called moai, number nearly a thousand and were carved from volcanic rock between the 13th and 16th centuries.

The term often describes the distinctive style—solemn expression, prominent brow, long nose—rather than the statues themselves: He sat there like an Easter Island head, completely expressionless.
