terminal hair

Thick, pigmented growth

Terminal hair is the thick, coarse, pigmented hair that grows on the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, and after puberty on the face, underarms, and pubic area.

It contrasts with vellus hair, the fine, nearly invisible fuzz covering most of the body.

Hormonal changes convert vellus hair to terminal hair during puberty and, paradoxically, can convert scalp terminal hair back to vellus in pattern baldness.
