dermal papilla
Hair growth regulator
A dermal papilla is a small projection of the dermis into the epidermis, the two main layers of skin.
These finger-like structures increase the surface area where the layers meet, strengthening their connection and improving nutrient exchange.
Dermal papillae are especially prominent in thick skin like the palms and soles, where they create the ridges that form fingerprints.
In hair follicles, the dermal papilla is the cluster of cells at the base that regulates hair growth.
