tapping out

Submitting in defeat

Tapping out is signaling surrender or exhaustion, originally from combat sports where a fighter taps the mat or opponent to concede defeat: He was caught in an armbar and had to tap out.

The phrase extends to any situation where someone reaches their limit and quits: I'm tapping out after this last round of drinks.

In poker, tapping out means losing all your chips.
