tanning hides
Processing animal pelts
Tanning hides is the process of converting raw animal skins into leather.
The skin is treated with chemicals—traditionally tree bark extracts containing tannins, now often chromium salts—to make it durable, flexible, and resistant to decay.
The tanning process can take weeks or months: He spent the summer tanning hides at his grandfather's farm.
