tamaracks

Needle-dropping evergreens

Tamaracks are deciduous conifers native to North America, unusual among needle-bearing trees for dropping their needles each fall.

The wood is rot-resistant and valued for posts, poles, and boat building.

The tree favors cold, boggy terrain across Canada and the northern United States: We hiked through a stand of tamaracks turning gold in October.
