talking pictures

Movies with dialogue

Talking pictures are motion pictures with synchronized sound, especially dialogue.

The term emerged in the late 1920s when films transitioned from silent movies to sound recordings.

Now old-fashioned—shortened to talkies in casual speech, or simply movies or films: My grandmother still calls them talking pictures.
