system log
Computer event diary
A system log is a file where a computer records events, errors, and operational data about its own processes.
Operating systems, servers, and applications write to system logs automatically, creating a timeline useful for troubleshooting problems or auditing security: The system log showed the crash happened at 3:47 AM.
Often shortened to syslog.
