swimming test
Aquatic skill assessment
A swimming test is an assessment of a person's ability to swim, typically required before access to deeper water at pools, camps, or waterfront facilities.
The test usually involves swimming a set distance or demonstrating basic strokes and treading water: Kids who pass the swimming test can use the diving board.
The term also refers historically to a method of identifying supposed witches—the accused was thrown into water, with floating taken as proof of guilt.
