surrogating

Acting as proxy

Surrogating is acting as a substitute or stand-in for someone or something else.

The term appears in discussions of surrogacy—carrying a pregnancy for another person—but extends to any context where one thing replaces another: She's been surrogating for the absent committee chair.

In psychology, surrogating describes redirecting emotions toward a substitute target.
