superpositions

Quantum states coexisting

Superpositions is the plural of superposition, the state of being placed or layered on top of something else.

In physics, particularly quantum mechanics, superposition describes a system existing in multiple states simultaneously until measured or observed: The electron exists in a superposition of spin states.

The term appears in geology for layered rock formations and in mathematics for combining waveforms.
