sunbows

Mist-made color bands

Sunbows are rainbow-like arcs produced when sunlight refracts through water droplets from sources other than rain—typically waterfalls, fountains, or heavy mist.

Unlike rainbows, which appear opposite the sun after storms, sunbows form in the spray close at hand: A sunbow hung in the mist at the base of the falls.

The term is less common than rainbow but appears in nature writing and travel descriptions.
