overcast skies
Clouds blocking sun
Overcast skies are skies completely or mostly covered by clouds, blocking direct sunlight.
The phrase describes gray, uniform cloud cover rather than partly cloudy conditions: We canceled the picnic because of overcast skies.
Weather forecasts use it to indicate dull but not necessarily rainy conditions.
