summoning circle

A summoning circle is a ritual diagram, typically drawn on the floor or ground, used in occult practice to call forth spirits, demons, or other supernatural entities.
The circle traditionally protects the summoner while containing whatever is summoned.
Though rooted in medieval grimoires and ceremonial magic, summoning circles appear frequently in fantasy fiction, video games, and horror: The cultists gathered around the summoning circle as the candles flickered.
