strong safety
Deep coverage defender
Strong safety is a defensive position in American football, one of two safeties who play deep in the secondary.
The strong safety lines up on the "strong side" of the offense—the side with more players, typically where the tight end aligns.
Compared to the free safety, the strong safety plays closer to the line of scrimmage and is more involved in run defense and covering tight ends: The strong safety blitzed off the edge and forced a fumble.
