straight-6

Linear engine layout

A straight-6 is an internal combustion engine with six cylinders arranged in a single row, as opposed to a V-6 configuration where cylinders are split into two angled banks.

The inline arrangement produces naturally smooth operation because the firing impulses balance each other.

Also called an inline-6 or I-6: The old BMW had a silky straight-6 under the hood.
