rain bands
Hurricane's curving arms
Rain bands are elongated regions of precipitation that spiral around a storm's center, especially in hurricanes and tropical cyclones.
These bands alternate with clearer areas, creating the characteristic pinwheel appearance visible on weather radar.
Rain bands can extend hundreds of miles from the eye and often produce the heaviest rainfall and strongest winds outside the storm's core: The outer rain bands are already bringing squalls to the coast.
