steam pipes
Vapor transport tubes
Steam pipes are conduits that carry steam from a boiler to radiators, machinery, or other equipment.
They're a fixture of older buildings with steam heat, often exposed and prone to clanking as they expand and contract: The steam pipes hissed and banged all winter.
Steam pipes running through basements and utility spaces are sometimes wrapped in insulation.
