steady-state
Unchanging over time
Steady-state describes a system in equilibrium—where conditions remain constant over time despite ongoing processes.
In physics and engineering, a steady-state is reached when inputs and outputs balance: The reactor achieved steady-state after three hours.
The term contrasts with transient states, where variables are still changing.
Steady-state economics questions the assumption that growth must be perpetual.
