static line
Automatic parachute opener
A static line is a cord attached to an aircraft that automatically deploys a parachute when a jumper exits.
The line remains fixed to the plane while the jumper falls away, pulling the parachute open without requiring the jumper to pull a ripcord.
Static line jumps are standard for military airborne operations and beginning skydivers: They made their first jumps on static line before learning freefall.
