reserve chute
Secondary parachute system
A reserve chute is the backup parachute carried by skydivers and paratroopers in case their main canopy fails to deploy properly or malfunctions.
Also called a reserve or emergency chute, it's typically smaller and more compact than the primary parachute, packed in a separate container and rigged for rapid deployment.
He had to cut away his tangled main and pull his reserve chute at 2,000 feet.
