taking stock
Reviewing one's situation
Taking stock is pausing to assess a situation, reviewing what you have or where things stand.
The phrase comes from merchants counting inventory, but now applies broadly to evaluation and reflection: After the divorce, she spent a month taking stock of her life.
To take stock of something is to consider it carefully before deciding what to do next.
