sprint relay

Baton-passing footrace

A sprint relay is a track and field race in which teams of runners each complete a short distance before passing a baton to the next teammate.

The most common sprint relays are the 4×100 meters and 4×400 meters, where four runners each cover the specified distance: The U.S. team dropped the baton in the sprint relay.

The exchange zones where handoffs occur are crucial—botched passes cost more races than speed deficits.
