sorb

European fruit tree

To sorb is to take up and hold a substance, either by absorption (drawing it into the interior) or adsorption (collecting it on the surface).

The term covers both processes when the distinction doesn't matter: Activated charcoal sorbs impurities from water.

Separately, a sorb is a European tree related to the mountain ash, or its small fruit.
