solidarity strike
Supporting others' protest
A solidarity strike is a work stoppage by employees who have no direct grievance with their own employer, undertaken to support workers striking elsewhere.
The strikers show unity with fellow workers by refusing to cross picket lines or by walking out in sympathy: The dockworkers launched a solidarity strike to back the truckers' demands.
Also called a sympathy strike.
