soft rot
Bacterial plant disease
Soft rot is a plant disease caused by bacteria or fungi that breaks down cell walls, turning affected tissue into a mushy, foul-smelling mass.
It commonly attacks fruits, vegetables, and bulbs in storage or damp conditions: The potatoes developed soft rot in the cellar.
The term also describes the decay pattern itself.
