social cues
Unspoken behavioral signals
Social cues are the verbal and nonverbal signals people give off that communicate their feelings, intentions, or expectations.
These include facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, and word choice.
Reading social cues means interpreting these signals correctly—knowing when someone wants to end a conversation, when a joke has landed poorly, or when silence means discomfort rather than agreement.
He missed the social cues that she wasn't interested.
