soapstones
Soft metamorphic rocks
Soapstones are soft, easily carved metamorphic rocks composed largely of talc.
The name comes from their smooth, soapy feel.
Soapstone resists heat and chemicals, making it useful for countertops, sinks, and laboratory surfaces.
Historically it was carved into bowls, figurines, and bed warmers.
The old farmhouse had soapstone sinks in the kitchen.
